Three brokers, two topics, two consumer groups, all running right here. Take a guided scenario, or break things yourself: stop a broker, cut its power, add a consumer, drag the timeline back to see it again, or type kafka-topics --describe in the terminal.
Step 1 of 5
Each box is a broker: a server with a disk. The topic orders has 3 PartitionAn ordered, append-only log. A topic is split into partitions so it can be spread over brokers and read in parallel; order holds only inside one partition., and each partition has 3 ReplicaA copy of a partition on one broker. Replication factor 3 means three copies on three brokers., one per broker. In every row, L marks the LeaderThe one replica that takes writes and serves reads for a partition. The others copy it. and F the FollowerA replica that keeps fetching new records from the leader, ready to take over.. Leaders are spread so each broker leads one partition.
